Prof. Dr. Hakan Birkent graduated from Gülhane Military Medical Faculty in 1996 and completed his specialty training in Gülhane Military Medical Academy Otorhinolaryngology Department in 2002. Between 2007 and 2008, he worked on the treatment of voice diseases, swallowing problems and airway stenosis at the University of Washington Otolaryngology Department in Seattle, USA. Dr. Hakan Birkent, who earned the title of Associate Professor in 2010, served as a faculty member in GATA ENT Department until his retirement in 2017. In 2019, he received the title of Professor at Nişantaşı University.

In addition to general otorhinolaryngology applications, Prof. Dr. Hakan Birkent is known for his studies especially on voice diseases, voice feminization and deepening, swallowing problems and airway stenosis a rhinoplasty. He has developed his own surgical technique (Tensioning Glottoplasty) for voice feminization.

Prof. Dr. Hakan Birkent has more than 50 scientific studies published in international and national refereed journals and has an H-index of 16. He has also presented more than 50 papers and various international awards presented at international and national scientific meetings. He has participated in many international and national scientific meetings, conferences, panels and workshops as a speaker and trainer. He is a founding member of the International Association of TransVoice Surgeons.
